Documentary: Orgasm, Inc.

Award-winning American filmmaker Liz Canner will present her documentary Orgasm Inc. on November 1, 2011, at Harriman Hall 111 Film Theatre at the Middletown Campus and on November 2, 2011 in the Great Room, Kaplan Hall 101 at the Newburgh Campus of SUNY Orange. Both screenings will start at 7pm.

Admission is free to the public and registration is not required.

Orgasm Inc. is a feature-length, investigative documentary that is humorous but sobering as it looks inside the cash-fueled pharmaceutical industry and its perception of women’s health and illness. The film makes a powerful statement by demonstrating the fevered race to develop the first FDA- approved Viagra for women and by showing how the medical industry and marketing campaigns are literally and figuratively reshaping concepts of wellness with their “invention” of a new disease: Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD).

Liz Canner, founder and director of Astrea Media, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating media projects on human rights issues, graduated with honors from Brown University. She has been the recipient of over 50 awards, honors, and grants for her work including a Rockefeller Foundation Next Generation Leadership Fellowship for "creating innovative media projects that strengthen democracy," a National Endowment for the Arts Grant, a Radcliffe Institute Bunting Film/Video Fellowship from Harvard University, and the Visionary Award from Dartmouth College. She employs cutting-edge technologies to explore social issues from a new perspective.

This two-evening event is a collaborative effort of SUNY Orange Cultural Affairs, Middletown & Newburgh, the student Board of Activities, SUNY Orange Health Services, and Planned Parenthood of the Mid-Hudson Valley.
