Home Is Where the Heart Is
The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor presents "Home is Where the Heart Is," on Sunday, February 13, 2011: 2-4 pm.
When we think of Valentine’s Day, images of hearts, Cupid shooting his arrows at lovers, boxes of chocolates and being with our loved ones come to mind. But Valentine’s Day is different when loved ones are far from home and in harm’s way. All too often we forget that the distance from one’s family and friends represents a major sacrifice for the men and women in our Armed Forces. Sometimes the only connection with family, friends and lovers is through the written word:
“…You’ll never know what it means to hear from folks you love.”
So wrote wounded soldier Ellsworth Meyers to his family during World War II.
This program will cover the entire range of wars for which Americans have been awarded the Purple Heart. Although the modern Purple Heart was not created until 1932, veterans from as far back as the Civil War applied for, and were awarded the Purple Heart. We have chosen letters that reflect this full range of our history, from the Civil War (1861-1865) to the current conflict in Afghanistan. Staff members of the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor and friends will read letters both to and from service men and women that reflect their feelings and experiences across three centuries of American military conflict.
At times funny, serious, poignant or even political, the letters personalize the experience of war in a way that history books cannot. To set the stage for each era represented, musical selections will be performed.
Admission is FREE but seating is limited and reservations are suggested. Please call 845-561-1765.
The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor and New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Sites are co-located at 374 Temple Hill Road (Route 300) in the town of New Windsor, three miles south of I-84 exit 7B and I-87 exit 17. Parking, gift shop, and picnic grounds are located on site. Museum exhibits are open 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday - Saturday and from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday.
