Celebrate the Spoken Word
Spoken word artist Bob McNeil and his accompanist, King Aswad, will share poems and songs that celebrate Black History Month at a free program at the Newburgh Free Library on Sunday, February 13. They also invite fellow poets, rappers and singers to perform in an Open Mic segment.
McNeil will present his original work along with classic pieces in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., Coretta Scott King, Malcolm X, Betty Shabazz, Nelson Mandela and others. The poetry editor of BLACFAX and the author of two poetry anthologies, McNeil says he is influenced by the exuberance of Walt Whitman, the Imagists and the Negritude Movement.
“Even after all of these years of being a professional illustrator, actor and writer, I still hope to express and address the needs of the human mosaic,” McNeil said.
McNeil will appear at the library with King Aswad, a multi-talented singer-songwriter. He has toured with the Rent and appeared at The Nuyorican Poets Cafe, The Blue Note, and the world famous Apollo Theater. His film credits include The Siege starring Denzel Washington and various music videos. King Aswad also recently appeared in Born Blue and American Drum Circle.
The public is invited to this celebration of the spoken word at the Newburgh Free Library on Sunday, February 13 at 3 pm. No registration is required. For more information, call the Newburgh Free Library, 845-563-3614 or 563-3600.
