Free Community Forum, Deer?! Oh Dear!
HHLT Hosts Free Community Forum, Deer?! Oh Dear!
On Sunday, March 26, the Hudson Highlands Land Trust will host Deer?! Oh Dear! The Impact of Deer Overpopulation on our Environment and Ways to Mitigate It, a community forum, at the Highlands Country Club, 955 Route 9D in Garrison, New York. The event, scheduled from 11:00am to 3:00pm, will feature a moderated 90-minute panel discussion in the morning, and two 40-minute breakout sessions in the afternoon. Participants will enjoy a complimentary lunch, and have the opportunity to browse information tables and exhibits during lunch, as well as before and after the sessions.
The morning panelists will discuss the ways in which the overpopulation of native deer affects local forests, wildlife habitat and human health, and various mitigation methods. Attendees will be invited to participate in the discussion and ask questions. The panel discussion will be moderated by Dr. Edwin McGowan, Director of the Trailside Museums and Zoo at Bear Mountain State Park. Panelists include Cris Golde, Garrison Hunting and Fishing Club; Dr. William Schuster, Black Rock Forest Consortium; and Jennifer Stengle, Cornell Cooperative Extension.
During the afternoon breakout sessions, attendees will have the opportunity to brainstorm with experts on topics raised during the panel discussion. These include Horticulture – Limiting Deer Impact with Plant Choice and Bio-Control with Jennifer Stengle and Anne Symmes; Hunting – Managing Deer Population of the Absence of Natural Predators with Cris Golde and Jonathan Russell; and Human Health – Separating Fact from Fiction, and Tips for Protection against Tick- borne Illnesses with Dr. Edwin McGowan and Nicole Wooten.
The forum is open to the public and free of charge ($10 donation suggested), but advance registration is required as space is limited. Walk-ins will only be admitted on a space-available basis. Visit hhlt.org/sustainExpo.html for more information or to make a reservation.
