Evening Speaker Series: Why did Thomas Jefferson establish the U.S. Military Academy?
The Hudson Highlands Nature Museum in partnership with the Cornwall Presbyterian Church presents the Fall Evening Speakers Series: Why did Thomas Jefferson establish the U.S. Military Academy? This lecture will take place on Tuesday, October 19, 7:30 p.m. at the Cornwall Presbyterian Fellowship Hall, 222 Hudson Street, Cornwall-on-Hudson. Why did Thomas Jefferson, who claimed to fear standing armies and had opposed a 1793 proposal to establish a national school to train army officers, as president in 1802, establish the United States Military Academy at West Point? Join Robert McDonald, Associate Professor of History at the USMA, and Christine McDonald, History Coordinator at the Tuxedo Park School and former Research Associate at Monticello’s Center for Jefferson Studies, for a spirited discussion of Jefferson’s possible motivations involving politics, westward expansion and nation-building aspects of a young country. This program is funded, in part, by the New York Council for the Humanities.
