On Saturday, May 22nd, Cornwall Public Library will present Irish Arts: as Spoken – an Irish storytelling workshop followed by a special program, both featuring well-known Irish storyteller Bairbre McCarthy. The “As Spoken” event is the third in a 3-part series “Irish Arts: As Seen, Heard and Spoken”. The entire project is the creation of the library’s program coordinator, Rosaleen Leahy, and has been made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts’ Decentralization Program administered by Arts in Orange and through the generosity of the Friends of Cornwall Library.

Long ago in Ireland, following the oral tradition of the Celts, the storyteller would record all the great events. These stories provided great entertainment for the people of Ireland. Bairbre McCarthy continues this tradition. Featuring stories of ancient kings, heroes and fairy folk, the mythological legends she tells blend with the history of Ireland.

In the morning Workshop that begins at 10:00 a.m. – “Great Memories Make Great Stories” – participants will learn techniques of telling an original story or re-telling a traditional tale. Registration is required pre-workshop, with attendance limited to 20 Orange County residents.

At 2:00 p.m. Ms. McCarthy will be featured in a storytelling performance entitled “A Musical Journey Through the Stories of Ireland” accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Frank Orsini, whose skill on fiddle, guitar and harp, enhance Bairbre’s storytelling and adds tandem-storytelling, singing and dancing to the program. Attendance is limited to 100 people and registration is required. Both the Workshop and Program will take place at Munger Cottage.

Registration for either or both events can be made by calling the Library at 534-8282, or by e-mailing Rosaleen Leahy at [email protected].
