Orange County Ballet Theatre Spring Performance
The Orange County Ballet Theatre repeats its annual Spring Performance for the community at an free program at the Newburgh Free Library on Sun., May 22 at 3 p.m.
To open the program, co-artistic director Carol Purcell has restaged "Grand Pas Classique" from the ballet Esmeralda, originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and composed by Pugni and Drigo. This piece has rarely been seen in the United States and showcases beautifully student dancers ranging in age from 10 to 18. Next is a famous "Pas de Trois" from Paquita, also choreographed by Marius Petipa and restaged by Carol Purcell, but composed by Minkus.
This performance is made possible in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts’ Decentralization Program administered by Arts in Orange. This grant made possible the participation of gifted young choreographer and dancer Matt Winnegge.
Winnegge choreographed "Send in the Clowns" composed by Sondheim. One of company’s most talented dancers Brianna Levy, a junior at NFA, tells this story of a young girl meeting a young man at a town fair. A balloon comes to symbolize their budding romance. Winnegge’s second piece is set to "I Am What I Am" composed by Linda Eder. It tells the story of a nerdy girl trying to fit in with the popular clique, and proving how great she is in her own way. The piece is set with five dancers.
Finally, Co-Artistic Director Alicia Lovely has choreographed "Delibes Divertissements" for the entire company, composed by Leo Delibes. Lovely’s choreography always shows dancers to their best advantage, and this ballet has a Dance of the Hours, Dawn, Prayer, a Mazurka, a Spanish dance, a Scottish dance, two more variations and a finale with everyone. It also has a short pas de deux that tells the story of a young girl trying to figure out if her young man loves her. According to an old tradition, if you shake a stalk of wheat by your ear and it rattles, it means that the person you love loves you back.
No registration is required. For information, call the Newburgh Free Library, 845-563-3600. Refreshments will be provided courtesy of the Friends of the Newburgh Free Library.
