Do Trumpets Dream of Electric Sheep?
The West Point Band’s Chamber Recital Series will continue on Sunday, September 26 at 3:00 p.m. in the West Point Band’s Egner Hall. Sergeant First Class Richard Johnson will present a recital on trumpet and laptop computer in a solo improvised performance entitled “Do Trumpets Dream of Electric Sheep? –An Afternoon of Ambient Acousmatic Improvisation.” It is free and open to the public.
Acousmatic music is a form of electro-acoustic music that deals specifically with acousmatic sound, or sound one hears without seeing an originating cause. The practice has a historical basis in musique concrète. It can be created using non-acoustic technology, and is most often played through loudspeakers. The compositional material is not restricted to musical instruments or voices, nor to elements traditionally thought of as “musical” (melody, harmony, rhythm, meter and so on), but rather admits any sound, acoustic or synthetic. With the aid of various technologies, this material can then be combined, juxtaposed, and transformed in any conceivable manner. In this context the compositional method can be seen as a process of sound organization, a term first used by the French composer Edgard Varèse. This is surely a recital not to be missed.
