Origami Chandelier at Bear Mountain
|
| Don't miss the Origami Chandelier. |
Take a ride to Bear Mountain State Park and check out the 100 origami pieces created in the forms of local plants and animals.
In commemoration of the centennial of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission's 1909 dedication, as well as the centennial of the Harriman family gift of 1 million dollars and 10,000 acres, the Palisades Parks Conservancy teamed up with Artist in the Parks (AiP) member Robert Gulick in the creation of a unique attraction at the Bear Mountain Merry-Go-Round. Visitors can see 100 origami pieces hanging from its central chandelier, each representing an indigenous plant or animal found in the Hudson Valley.
From the artist:
"This 100 piece origami installation of indigenous species was such a great opportunity for me to be part of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission celebration. This project presented new challenges and allowed me to explore my skills in new ways – deciding which indigenous species to represent and learning the new origami models in time to produce 100 larger versions. I had to increase my library to find images of beavers and coyotes. Other species, like butterflies, have up to 10 different designs and I had to choose the perfect one. Another challenge was sheer size. I had to find paper large enough to meet the scale of this project, which was to hang from the central chandelier. Standard size origami would have been too small to see in this venue. I needed to create origami models larger than one foot to make the desired impact. Creating this display was a wonderful experience in which I expanded my craft and enjoyed sharing with the community. I hope to apply my artistic skills with origami as well as photography to future PIPC eve nts."
