Memorial Day & its Historic Roots: Preserving the Sacred Memory of a Nation's Sacrifice
National Purple Heart Hall of Honor
Memorial Day & its Historic Roots: Preserving the Sacred Memory of a Nation's Sacrifice
Saturday, May 29, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m
For many, Memorial Weekend signals the end of spring and the beginning of summer. Truly though, it has a deeper meaning. At the end of the American Civil War, our nation was bloodied, but whole. The price was high, taking the lives of over 620,000 Americans. The Union veterans of that War wanted to ensure that the sacrifices made "on the altar of freedom" would not be forgotten. One visible result of that desire was the call for a national observance to decorate the graves of those who fell in defense of the Union during that War. Today, the holiday honors all who have died in the service of our country.
The Hall of Honor program will include the following activities:
11:00 a.m.: A concert of Civil War themed music played by the 89th New York Guard Band. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for the concert.
1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Musket firing demonstrations by The Civil War living historians of the 150th New York.
2:00 p.m. A short lecture on the origins of the Memorial Day holiday and the story of how there are 14 Civil War veterans enrolled in the Roll of Honor here at the Hall, as they received Purple Hearts.
Throughout the day, the 150th New York will be here to talk to the public, as well as display the uniforms and equipment of Union soldiers.
Admission is Free
