Ring in the Holiday Season Louisiana-Style
The Ritz Theater Presents An Evening with Jesse Lége and Bayou Brew: Ring in the Holiday Season Louisiana-Style
On Sunday December 6 at 3 PM the Ritz Theater and La Bella Strings, in association with the Bardavon, will continue the Tom Humphrey Guitar Series with a concert by Jesse Lége and Bayou Brew.
Jesse Lége is one of the most admired Cajun accordionists and vocalists from Southwest Louisiana. Beginning with Cajun accordion at age 16, Lége has been playing traditional Cajun music for over 40 years with a variety of bands in various Louisiana dancehalls. He has also played many Cajun events around the world, including Festivals Acadiens, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and the prestigious Chicago Folk Festival. Lege has garnered numerous Cajun French Music Association awards (know as the “Cajun Grammys”) including Traditional Band of the Year, Accordion Player of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, Band of the Year, and for "Memoires Dans Mon Coeur," Song of the Year. Lége has recorded five cds with the Lake Charles Ramblers, the Southern Ramblers, and Live at the Isleton Crawdad Festival with master Creole fiddler Ed Poullard. In 1998 he was inducted into the Cajun Music Hall of Fame. Lége plays the accordion with unique power and style; he embellishes the melodies extensively, but never to the point of putting flash over substance. He possesses one of the truly great voices in contemporary Cajun music; his vocals have a high, lonesome sound that can easily cut across a dancehall without the aid of a microphone. Listeners who do not experience chills hearing him sing had better check their pulse. Known for his love of jamming, Jesse says about his cultural heritage of music, "Share it or let it die."
For this show, Lége will be backed by the mighty Bayou Brew: Evie Schneider on five-string bass, Darren Wallace on fiddle and electric guitar, Chad Huval on guitar, three-row accordion and vocals and Mike Migliozi on drums and vocals.
This will be a great opportunity to enjoy a little Cajun heat before another Hudson Valley winter. Bring your dancing shoes, as Jesse himself puts it: “Dancing encouraged… no, make that mandatory!”
The Tom Humphrey Guitar Series serves to honor the memory of the legendary Hudson Valley-based luthier who passed away in 2008. The idea for the concerts came from Tom Humphrey just two months before his death. In a series of meetings with Chris Silva of the Bardavon, Richard Cocco, Jr. of La Bella Strings and Tricia Haggerty Wenz of the Ritz Theater and Safe Harbors of the Hudson, Humphrey laid the ground work for a guitar series at the Ritz which kicked off its inaugural season with performances by Odair Assad, Pete Seeger, Bucky Pizzarelli and others.
he concerts will be held in the lobby of the Ritz Theater at 107 Broadway in Newburgh, and tickets can be purchased through www.ticketweb.com or by calling the Ritz Theater Box Office at (845) 784-1199. All tickets are $25, general admission and include a reception with the musicians immediately following the concert. Seating is limited.
