Vernal Pool Workshop

Orange County Land Trust to Hold Vernal Pool Workshop at Laurel Hill Preserve, Minisink

The Orange County Land Trust will hold a family friendly workshop on vernal pools on Saturday, March 27 beginning at 10 am at the Land Trust’s 89-acre nature preserve in the Town of Minisink.

Join Orange County Land Trust to explore the newly formed vernal pools and learn about the species that rely on them for survival such as frogs, fairy shrimp, salamanders and newts! This workshop is a hands-on, outdoor activity for families and people of all ages.  It will be led by Orange County Land Trust staff member Meredith Taylor, who is also Assistant Coordinator of the North American Amphibian Monitoring Program for the Hudson Valley.  Be prepared to get a little wet, and all are encouraged to wear mud boots!

Laurel Hill Preserve is an 89 acre natural area of unique and varied habitat including woodlands, an alfalfa field, wetlands, vernal pools and Tunkamoes Creek.  Located within the Wallkill watershed, this biologically-diverse habitat is host to a great variety of plant and animal species.  It is open to the public every day of the year for passive recreation such as hiking, photography and nature study.

Registration is suggested as space is limited.  A donation of $5 per person, or $10 per family, is greatly appreciated with all donations going towards the future stewardship of Laurel Hill Preserve.  For registration and further information, please call the Orange County Land Trust at (845) 343-0840, x 12.

The Orange County Land Trust is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving Orange County’s natural and agricultural heritage.  The Land Trust specializes in working with landowners who voluntarily want to preserve their land for future generations, and partners with the county and other open space organizations in promoting land conservation and smart growth planning practices.  For more information and for volunteer opportunities and ways of giving, please visit the website at  www.oclt.org.
