A wine and cheese reception marks the opening of the joint exhibit Works on Paper and Mixed Media on Thursday, February 9, 2012 from 5-7pm in the CenterArts Gallery of Kaplan Hall.
Works on Paper and Mixed Media features the works of artists Peter Cody and Barbara Smith Gioia. This exhibit contains an assembly of pieces demonstrating the styles of both artists using a variety of mixed mediums such as paint and encaustic.
The exhibit will be open from Thursday, February 9, 2012 until Friday, March 16, 2012. The Gallery will be open from 10pm – 2pm on Tuesdays and Thursday and from 2pm – 4pm on Wednesdays.
Barbara Smith Gioia has a Master of Fine Arts from Hunter College, NY, and has been a teaching artist for all of her adult life. She has made the Hudson Valley her home and workplace for the past 18 years and is affiliated with Marina Gallery in Cold Spring, NY, where she recently had a solo exhibition of her mixed media encaustic paintings. Barbara Smith Gioia has immersed herself in various forms of painting and printmaking for most of her adult life. Her foray into encaustic painting and silkscreen printing over the last several years has led to mixed media paintings that combine the two. Her works are abstract studies in time and space that emphasize the physical nature of constructing a painting.
Peter Cody studied painting and sculpture at The School of Visual Arts. He taught drawing at Spokane Community College. Mr. Cody also taught printmaking for the Printmakers of Cape Cod. He has exhibited in Seattle, WA, Cape Cod, MA, New York City, Newburgh, and Cornwall, NY, and his work is represented in a number of collections. About his work, Mr. Cody says, “My paintings explore the dynamics of color, architecture and primitive motives. The images I make are vehicles to explore the nature of paint.”
