Mike Levine Read-athon

Writers from all over the country attended the 2009 Mike Levine Workshop. The Mike Levine column Read-athon helps support the annual hands-on workshop.

The community is invited to join in the third annual Read-athon of stories and columns by the late Mike Levine to help support one of the best writing workshops in the journalism business.

Jim Moss, former publisher of the Times Herald-Record, will host the Read-athon at Christine's on Broadway, his new Southern barbecue restaurant in the heart of Newburgh. The read-athon will be held from 2-6 p.m. Jan. 17 at Christine's, at 167 Broadway (the snow date is Jan. 24). A special barbecue sampler will be served.

The 2010 workshop has been planned to celebrate the life and career of Levine on the third anniversary of his death. The beloved Times Herald-Record columnist and former executive editor died suddenly in January 2007 at the age of 54. The Read-athon supports the Mike Levine Workshop, a hands-on writing workshop credited with reigniting the passions of working journalists.

At the read-athon, anyone who wishes to read one of Mike's 1,800 columns is welcome, as are those who simply want to listen. Donations to the Mike Levine Journalism Education Fund may be given at that time or at www.mikelevineworkshop.org.

Columns will be available at the Read-athon, or visit www.mikelevineworkshop.org to see them. Column readers are also welcome to get pledges of donations from their friends and neighbors. A pledge form can be found at the Web site as well. You can also contact Steve Israel for information at [email protected] or call 583-7046.

The Mike Levine Journalism Education Fund is a component fund of the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan counties, a nonprofit organization.
