The Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum presents:Platte Cove: Plein -Air Works by Susan Miiller
A singular vision from the Catskill Conservation Center by its Artist-in-Residence
Thursday, March 4 – Friday, April 30
A familiar Catskill landscape, made famous by America’s first internationally recognized art movement, the Hudson River School, comes alive in the distinctively original work of Susan Miiller. Working additively and subtractively, she builds a paint surface as subtle and varied as the earth’s topography. Her plein-air paintings, created as Artist-in-Residence at Platte Clove, Catskill Conservation Center, are thickly painted direct observations of nature. Her gemlike hues depict the area’s waterfalls with vivid clarity, and though representational in imagery, her paintings capture important abstract qualities that embody the duality between paint and imagery. Working with dramatic modulations of color and space, she captures not only the physical form but also the psychological spirit of her subject.
Holding a bachelor’s degree in fine art from the State University of New York at New Paltz and an MFA from the University of North Texas, Ms. Miiller has had solo exhibitions in museums and galleries in New York, Connecticut, and Texas. Her work is included in many public and private collections, including those of the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the University of North Texas, the Arts and Science Center of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and the Centex Corporation. Widely praised in the national press, she has received awards from Orange Arts, SUNY New Paltz, the Susquehanna Art Museum, Women and Their Work, the Fourth Biennial Arkansas Art Exhibition, and numerous other institutions and organizations. She has served as Artist-in-Residence at the Weir Farm Trust, the Vermont Studio Center, and the Catskill Conservation Center at Platte Cove in Arkville, N.Y. Ms. Miiller has taught drawing, painting, art criticism, and the creative process at SUNY New Paltz since 1999.
The public is invited to meet the artist at an artist talk and closing reception at the Karpeles Museum on Friday, April 30, from 1 to 3 p.m.
