Stargazing & Foraging

The Orange County Land Trust will hold two new outings this August - an evening of stargazing and an afternoon of foraging in the woods and meadows - both at Moonbeams Preserve, the Land Trust’s 150- acre nature preserve in the Town of Wallkill.

Join the Land Trust on Saturday, August 7, beginning at 8:30 pm for “An Evening of Stargazing” led by SUNY Ulster professor Tom Crepett. Removed from neighborhood lights and into the open meadows of Moonbeams Preserve, participants will be able to view the summer constellations appearing in our night skies! As there will be no moon visible that evening, participants may be able to see the planets Mercury, Mars or Venus and perhaps even catch a glimpse of the beginnings of the Persied meteor shower. Participants are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, and telescopes or binoculars. Clouds and rain will cancel this event.

The next day, Sunday, August 8, the Land Trust will hold a “Wild, Edible and Medicinal Plant Walk” beginning at 1 pm, also at Moonbeams Preserve. At this event, a knowledgeable foraging guide will identify summer greens, nuts, berries, fruits, wild flowers, herbs and other plants that grow in the wild and are edible, have medicinal value, are decorative and/or poisonous. Bring water and magnifying glass. Long pants and socks as well as bug repellant are highly recommended.

Both events are appropriate for all ages. Registration is suggested as space is limited. A donation of $5 per person or $10 per family is suggested with all proceeds benefitting the protection of Orange County’s natural areas and working farmland. Call (845) 343-0840, x12 register. Directions to Moonbeams Preserve can be found on the Land Trust website at HYPERLINK "http://www.oclt.org/mmoonbeam.htm" www.oclt.org/mmoonbeam.htm.

The mission of the Orange County Land Trust is to preserve the fields, forests, wetlands, ridgelines and river corridors in and around Orange County through voluntary land conservation for the benefit of the people. To date, the nonprofit Land Trust has helped protected more than 3,500 acres of working farmland, biologically sensitive and scenically important lands throughout Orange County.
