Big Brothers, Big Sisters Health Fair
Mount students organize Big Brothers, Big Sisters Health Fair
Mount Saint Mary College will host a day of physical and health awareness, “Be Happy, Be Healthy,” for children who belong to Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Newburgh, from 2:30-5 p.m. Sunday (April 25) in the Elaine and William Kaplan Recreation Center.
Student athletes from the college’s basketball, lacrosse, soccer and swim teams will be on hand to teach team-centric drills of their particular sports to the children. Students from the college’s Delta Leadership Society, a service club on campus, will also be on hand to present a health fair to the children. The health fair will include four stations featuring lessons regarding the importance of regular bathing, how to properly brush teeth, how to properly wash hands, and how to practice healthy physical activity.
Timothy M. Casey, a senior communication arts major from Coram, has been a member of the Mount’s campus-based mentoring program with Big Brothers, Big Sisters for four years.
“I hope this event will become an annual event here at the college,” Casey said. “Mount Saint Mary College and Big Brothers, Big Sisters have a long-standing relationship and a highly successful campus-based mentoring program and I am proud to have been part of it.”
The Big Brothers, Big Sisters organization was founded in 1904 by a New York City court clerk named Ernest Coulter. Since then, the organization has expanded to all 50 states and 12 other countries. Its mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with mentors who have a measurable impact on youth.
Mount Saint Mary College was founded in Newburgh by the Dominican Sisters of Hope in 1959. The college offers over 50 undergraduate programs and three graduate programs. As per the college’s website: “Mount Saint Mary College strives to provide a stimulating environment that promotes the intellectual and personal growth of undergraduate, graduate and continuing education students.”
