Storm KIng School Graduation

The Storm King School is proud to announce that Mr. Robert M. Morgenthau, New York City’s legendary District Attorney, will be the commencement speaker at The Storm King School’s 141st commencement. The commencement is scheduled to take place Saturday, May 31st at 10:00 am.

No less than Edward Koch, former Mayor of New York City, was recently quoted in The New York Times regarding New York’s District Attorney, Robert Morgenthau: “By virtue of what he has done, he is the standard for district attorneys. As La Guardia was for mayors, Morgenthau has been for district attorneys.”

Mr. Morgenthau and his wife, Lucinda Franks, a noted author, will be on hand as their daughter Amy Morgenthau ’09 receives her certificate of diploma following Mr. Morgenthau’s speech. Mr. Morgenthau will be introduced by a School’s alumnus, Anthony Gair’67, who gave last year’s speech. Mr. Gair is a noted New York City litigator who litigated the famous Amadou Diallo case.
Mr. Morgenthau took over as prosecutor from another famous New Yorker, Frank Hogan. Morgenthau as an iconic prosecutor was the inspiration for the television show Law and Order’s character, Adam Schiff.

Morgenthau has pursued white collar crime and street crime with equal vigor and has litigated millions of cases with a felony conviction rate of 90%. Some of his most famous cases include: the Bernhard Goetz case, the Mark David Chapman case (John Lennon’s killer), and the Central Park Jogger case.

A staunch opponent of the death penalty, Morgenthau recently reflected that while his Central Park Jogger case convictions were overturned (at his request after new evidence emerged), in fact that case unquestionably proved the point he has long argued: the death penalty can lead to the wrongful death of innocent people, and is therefore morally unacceptable.

He was appointed U.S.Attorney for the Southern District of New York by his childhood friend, President John F. Kennedy, in 1961 the year after he helped campaign for Kennedy.  Morgenthau has recently supported Cyrus Vance, Jr., for the position of District Attorney of New York. Vance is the son of Cyrus Vance who served in President Jimmy Carter’s administration. The District Attorney of New York is an elected position and Cyrus Vance, Jr., recently announced he will run for the office.
