Newburgh Transportation and Land Use Study

The first Public Information Meeting of the Newburgh Area Transportation & Land Use Study is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27. The study is being undertaken by Orange County on behalf of the Orange County Transportation Council to examine transportation, local transit, connectivity and development in northeastern Orange County . The public is encouraged to attend. The meeting will be held at the Newburgh Recreation Center , 401 Washington Street , Newburgh from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with a presentation at 7:30 PM.

The study area comprises the OCTC Newburgh area, which includes the City of Newburgh and the four surrounding towns: Newburgh, New Windsor, Cornwall and Montgomery (and their villages). In addition to an overall assessment and plan for transportation in this area, the study will engage in more detailed planning for the Route 9W and Broadway / 17K corridors. An early deliverable will include a short term transit improvement plan for the Newburgh area local bus service.

“This Study is very important for making sure that our roadways, transit and related efforts are planned to improve mobility, support economic vitality and preserve the quality of life we enjoy in Orange County,” said County Executive Edward A. Diana and OCTC Chairman. The study is being managed by the Orange County Planning Department which provides OCTC staff support. The Study Team includes a Study Advisory Group of OCTC member municipalities and agencies to ensure local concerns and needs are addressed in the study, and current plans and projects are considered in planning discussions.

In addition to several Public Information Meetings throughout the 24-month Study, three interactive Public Design Workshops will be conducted from September 2009 through January 2010.  As part of its public involvement efforts, the Study launched an interactive Web site (www.newburghareastudy.info) where visitors can review study materials, post comments and sign up to receive updates and newsletters via e-mail.  [ Please note:  This Study is not part of the MTA West of Hudson Regional Transit Access Study. ]

Orange County Planning Department personnel and Study Team members will be on hand at the Public Information Meeting to answer questions and distribute information about the study.
