Sterling Forest State Park June Programs
The following programs will be offered by Sterling Forest State Park in June.
Hike of the Month: Sky Hike. Saturday, June 13th at 1:00 PM
Have you seen Bear Mountain and the Hudson River from 1284 feet in the air? Join in, and hike in the sky atop Bear Mountain. Meet at Perkins Tower Parking Lot at 1:00 PM. This will be a thrilling 3 mile moderate hike.
Lecture Series: History of Iona Island. Thursday, June 18th at 7:00 PM
Park Educator, Doc Bayne, will talk about Iona Island and its long history of many uses from Native Americans, fruit and grape plantation, to U.S. Navy munitions depot. You will wonder how the island has survived the many abuses of man.
Family Fun Hike: History Hike on Iona Island. Sunday, June 21st at Noon
Hike and explore the history of Iona Island Sanctuary. Meet at Iona Island parking area by the RR crossing at Noon. This will be an easy to moderate 2 mile hike.
History Hike: The Lakeville Iron Trail. Sunday, June 28th at 1:00 PM
Did you know that iron was discovered here in 1736? Did you know that Sterling Iron supported the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and WW1. Come and hike the newest trail with Park Educator, Doc Bayne, and learn about the Iron Town of Lakeville and its important role in the history of our Nation.
Registration is required for all programs.
Trails can be steep and rocky, so please wear sturdy hiking shoes. As always, hikes will include stops along the way to interpret natural and historic features. Hiking takes place at the pace of our slowest hiker and remember to bring a snack for the halfway point.
