Peace through Understanding Benefit Concert

Please join the many musicians volunteering their talents and the many local business sponsors on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at “Peace through Understanding” - A Benefit Concert and Silent Auction to fund student Nick Czarniawski’s ambassadorship to China. The event will be held at the Monroe United Methodist Church, 47 Maple Ave, Monroe, NY beginning at 12 p.m. and running until approximately 6 p.m. The day’s lineup will feature the following area artists:
Singer/songwriter Jake Stigers built an impressive following on both sides of the Atlantic with a
reputation for powerful vocals, accomplished songwriting and exceptional live performances with his band The Velvet Roots. He launched his latest release armed with plenty of critical support. UK Sunday Express said, "His songs chime with such clear and literate brilliance". Time Out New York says: “Stigers plays rock without apologies, seamless songs with undeniably catchy choruses.”
Rob Schiff is a well-known local rock musician and songwriter who performs acoustic material with an emphasis on delivering good vibes and high energy. Rob performs regularly at the Oasis Cafe in New Paltz, Captain's Table in Monroe, Palaia winery in Highland Mills. As a Monroe Woodbury High School physics teacher, Rob inspires students with unique insights and high energy.
Gregg Van Gelder is a veteran musician and well-known performer in the Hudson Valley. He also owns Van Gelder music located in Monroe, NY. Van Gelder Music Center is a music retail store located in Monroe, NY that has been in business since 1994! Gregg and manager Zeb Kandros are both bass players, and also excellent repairmen, and have earned their reputations as being the place to go for local musicians, amateur and pro alike, in the Hudson Valley region of NY. Van Gelder Music Center also ships gear all over the world.
Bruce Winslow will lead the Monroe United Methodist Church Praise Band in a set of contemporary Christian songs. Bruce is the organist, choir director and band leader for the church. He is a retired music teacher from the school district and currently teaches bassoon, piano and bass through private instruction. Bruce has performed throughout the tri-state region and has composed many Christian songs and has released two CDs.
12 ½ year old Hayley Joon Kowkabany will open our program. Hayley is a Monroe Woodbury Middle School student who has been playing the cello for 4 years. She is a member of Allegro, All County (2nd chair), Chamber, NYSSMA, Concert and Fiddlers orchestras.
Local singer/songwriter Melanie Disa released her debut EP, True, in 1999 at the popular Mercury Lounge in NYC. After hearing songs from True, America Online featured her as an “Artist of the Week” saying, "Melanie has a voice reminiscent of Alison Krauss with the accessibility of Sheryl Crow." Songs from True received airplay on the east coast and her song, Ease the Pain, has received several awards. Melanie also sings with the MUMC praise band.
Silent Auction Sponsors include: Van Gelder Music, Little Italy, Greenery Plus Florist, Party Shack, Star Liquors, the Castle Fun Center, Aldo’s Pizza, Best Little Hair House, Linda Sullivan (stampin' up, Mary Kay & Arbonne Products), and many more still to come.
During the event, bins will be available to collect canned, jarred or dry good donations for the Monroe Food Pantry. The food pantry which serves the hungry in our community is seeking donations of jarred fruits, canned vegetables, soups, dry pasta, beans, baby food, and diapers.
Ticket prices are $10 and available at the door. Advance tickets are available at Star Liquors, Little Italy and Aldo’s Pizza, all in Monroe, NY. Advance purchase is strongly recommended, as space is limited. 100% of the ticket sales will go to People to People to fund student Nick Czarniawski’s ambassadorship to China in July 2009. All donors will be invited to attend a presentation upon Nick’s return.
Baked goods, and light fare will be sold throughout the day. A silent auction will be held featuring a wide assortment of local goods and services. “Peace through Understanding” Concert will help fulfill the Student Ambassadorship mission and at the same time will bring our community together to celebrate our common interest in peace.
