Tastemakers of an Era Symposium & Tour
In celebration of the New York State Quadricentennial Events and the 300th Anniversary of the City of Newburgh, the Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands is reviving its Tastemakers of an Era Symposium and Tour. This weekend long event will celebrate the partners of America’s first architectural firm, Andrew Jackson Downing, Calvert Vaux and Frederick Clarke Withers, who collaborated with Frederick Law Olmsted in defining our new nation’s architectural and landscape philosophy.
On Saturday, April 25, 2009 from 9am-12noon, a symposium of authors, historians, scholars and authorities on the biographies, examples and ideas of this early Newburgh firm will speak at the Withers designed Calvary Presbyterian Church, 120 South Street (at the corner of Grand St.) in the City of Newburgh.
The symposium will be led by Morrison Heckscher, Lawrence A. Fleischman Chair of the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and will include David Schuyler, author of Apostle of Taste, A.J. Downing 1815-1822; Francis Kowsky, author of County, Park & City Architecture, the Architecture and Life of Calvert Vaux; Judith Major, author of To Live in the New World: A.J. Downing and American Landscape Gardening; Arleyn Levee, Independent Olmsted Scholar; Charles Beveridge, Series Editor, The Papers of Frederick Law Olmsted; William Krattinger, New York State Historic Preservation Program Analyst and Kerry Dean Carso, Professor of Art History, SUNY New Paltz.
On Saturday afternoon following the symposium, Jeff Horst of Vassar College, will lead an arboretum tour of the Desmond Estate in the town of Newburgh, after which, attendees may avail themselves of a myriad of historical and cultural sites within easy reach of Newburgh.
On Sunday, April 26 at 12noon, participants will tour examples of Downing, Withers and Vaux buildings, homes and sites in and around the City of Newburgh. This self-guided tour will begin at the Crawford House, home to the Historical Society, 189 Montgomery St. (at the corner of Clinton St.), Newburgh, NY.
