The Artwork of Lydia Strawbridge: Visions from the Collective Unconscious: A Retrospective Spanning 65 Years
April 4th-May 23rd, 2009 at Johns Custom Framing, 2330 State Route 32, New Windsor, NY 12553
Opening reception: Saturday April 4th, 2009 from 3:00 p.m-7:00 p.m
Delighting in the mysterious, the mystical, and the profound, Cornwall resident Lydia Strawbridge creates exquisite ink and colored pencil
drawings which touch on both light and dark themes. Deeply influenced by the writings of Carl Jung, her work depicts a
universe of people young and old, creatures, sprites, and ethereal beings. Working by chance and intuition, images are
created of symbols and archetypes syphoned from the collective unconscious. As Lydia says,"It wanted to be there, wanted to be expressed,"
and so spirits are born onto paper. With a playful and yet eerie aesthetic, Lydia's work can be both sweet and at other times disturbing.
The joy of Lydia's artwork is in the bent laws of perspective and light, which lends itself to the spiritual quality of her art. Saturated, dark, and dense, her drawings often have a glowing light in the form of a moon, sun, or star, which illuminates the page. Her images come from and contain both worlds;that which we see and know-the limited, and the unknown- the limitless. The opposites emerge as positive and negative forces can be seen at work in her pieces. The Great Mother, a major theme in her work, embodies the opposites having all qualities. Therefore the Great Mother has many faces and expresses all aspects. In the same way, the artwork of Lydia Strawbridge is dynamic, varied, powerful, beautiful, and highly unique!
In past exhibitions she has been recognized and supported by the C.G Jung Working Group, as her work so deeply resonates with his theories.
