USMA Jazz Recital

On Sunday, September 20 at 3:00 p.m. in the West Point Band Building’s Egner Hall, percussionist Sgt. 1st Class Rone Sparrow will present a jazz recital. The theme will center on the sound of the jazz organ trio, a staple format of jazz music from the 1960’s.

Staff Sgt. Sparrow, a percussionist in the West Point Concert Band, is an accomplished drum set performer, journeying into the jazz world as time and Concert Band duties permit. Joining him are Staff Sgt. Vito Speranza, trumpet; Staff Sgt. Mark Tonelli, guitar; and Sergeant First Class Scott Arcangel, organ, doing double duty playing left-hand bass and right-hand chords, as is the practice on jazz organ.

The program will feature compositions from the hard bop and bebop catalogues. Among the selections are Thad Jones’s 1966 classic big band piece Groove Merchant, a natural vehicle for the jazz organ sound, and innovative bebop pianist Bud Powell’s hard-driving Webb City.

Please allow extra travel time for the 100% vehicle and photo I.D. inspection at Stony Lonesome and Thayer gates. Due to changing security requirements at West Point, call the Academy Band’s hotline at 845-938-2617, or check www.westpoint.edu/special before leaving for the concert.

For concert information, cancellations and updates,
call the Academy Band’s 24-hour hotline at (845) 938-2617.
