Photographs by Philip J. Hopp

Through the month of March, visitors to City Hall can enjoy beautiful views of Newburgh and the Hudson River by Cornwall-on-Hudson photographer Phillip J. Hopp.

Hopp, a cancer survivor, and a laryngectomee, is a retired New York City firefighter. He has done portrait and wedding photography in the past, but his other careers also include offset printing, paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne, Health and Safety Representative for the American Federation of Government Employees Local 2367, and former employee of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He is a graduate of the New York Institute of Photography and a member of the International Society of Photographers. He is past treasurer of Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Fatima of the Rosary Council #7460, Cornwall-on-Hudson.

In addition to an earlier exhibit in City Hall, in 2000, he has shown his work in the Orange County Building, Museum of the Hudson Highlands and also through the United States Military Academy, West Point, at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Michigan. Some of his photographs can also be seen at www.picture.com. For the last few years he exhibited and sold his works at Riverfest, Cornwall-on-Hudson, and at the Town of Cornwall fall festival sidewalk sale.

Mr. Hopp is, and has been, involved in local and national environmental issues for the past decade working with Citizens United for a Responsible Environment, (CURE), Citizens Alliance for a Safe Harbor, (CASH), Stewart Park and Reserve Coalition (SPARC), on the Drury Lane issue, and CCAD on wetland issues on the 9W development property now scheduled for senior citizen housing.

While on a trip to the Grand Canyon, in July 1997, Mr. Hopp was inspired to return again to photography, as a means of presenting the beauty of the earth's environment, in order to inspire others to get involved in helping to protect our earth.

Along with numerous awards from the International Society of Photographers, Mr. Hopp has won environmental awards. They include the Meritorious Service Award, from the White Lung Association of New Jersey, for protecting public health against asbestos exposure; an Organizational Award from Orange Environment for his work with CURE in the battle against soil burning plants in New Windsor, and induction into the grassroots Hall of Fame of the Center for Health and Environmental Justice.

City Hall is located at 83 Broadway, Newburgh, N.Y. 12550
