Reinventing Our Places Conference

The Orange County Citizens Foundation is urging community leaders and residents of local towns, cities and suburban areas to utilize the economic slowdown as an opportunity to evaluate how they would like to effect change and make great places in their communities.

In partnership with the Congress for The New Urbanism – New York Chapter, the Orange County Association of Realtors, and the Orange County Municipal Planning Federation, the Foundation is presenting “Reinventing Our Places,” a full day conference on Friday March 13th at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh from 8:00AM to 4:00PM. The public is encouraged to attend.

The workshop will combine the talents of nationally-recognized planning experts with in-the-trenches experiences of local community leaders. The goal of the conference is to introduce planning techniques and creative examples that all can benefit from. Attendees will learn the advantages of building community consensus, find out about new innovative planning techniques, determine the long-term sustainability of these new ideas, learn how to get things done without a lot of money and get started on transforming areas of your community into Great Places. The day will be topped off with tours of historic Newburgh led by the Newburgh Preservation Association.

Planning that improves communities doesn’t always have to cost a lot of money,” said Citizens Foundation President Nancy Proyect. “Alleyways can be decorated with wall murals by local artists. Vacant storefronts can house displays and zoning can preserve foliage that might be removed during construction. These are just a few small examples of making great places for our residents.” She added, “Transformations on a grander scale could involve creating a town center or revitalizing a strip center to become a center where the entire community shops, eats and spends recreational time. Zoning can also be developed that intersperses strip malls with parks or develops a park within a strip mall.”

Speakers include: nationally-recognized planners Gianni Longo, ACP and David Fields, Nelson Nygaard, Paul Beyer, Director of Smart Growth for the New York State Department of State, Lou Marquet, Leyland Alliance, Stuart Turner, Turner-Miller Group, representatives from our local communities including Alan Sorenson, PlanIt, John Clark, Dutchess County Planning Department, Dan Mack, Warwick Community 2000 & Rustic Furnishings, Trish Haggerty-Wenz, Safe Harbors, Susan Brown, Grantwriting Consultant, Richard Randazzo, former Cornwall Supervisor, Warwick Mayor Michael Newhard, Denise Frangipane, Sullivan Renaissance, and John Revella, from the Walden Community Council.
