Knickerbocker Ice Festival
Knickerbocker Ice Festival

Winter didn't let its arrival go unnoticed in the Hudson Valley and predictions of a cold one have so far lived up to the hype. Now that its official and the snow suits are out of mothballs, this means that the Knickerbocker Ice Festival is just a few short weeks away.

he Palisades Interstate Park Commission welcomes the Hudson Valley to Rockland Lake State Park on January 24th and 25th for a taste of history, winter art, and even a bowl of hot chili, soup, or stew. Our talented ice sculptors are busy preparing their icy interpretations of Henry Hudson's Half Moon and Robert Fulton's Clermont ships.

Those braving the cold and ascending above the lake in one of the two tethered hot air balloons donated for the event will see this magnificent park like never before, and the ice gallery's images of Rockland Lake's history frozen into huge blocks of ice will astound viewers at how different the park is today from its industrial and residential past. Campfires around the lake will keep you warm, and a first ever fireworks display above the lake on Saturday the 24th will be as intimate a display as many will have ever seen.

At the coldest time of year, as New York begins celebrating the Hudson Fulton Champlaine Quadricentennial, and the nation welcomes its newly inaugurated Pr esident, Rockland Lake will be a place of warmth and community, free of charge to all.

Weekend Festivities Include:

- Fireworks over Rockland Lake Saturday Night

- Hot Air Balloon Rides: Tethered balloons rise over Rockland Lake with the Hudson as a backdrop

- Fascinating Ice Sculptures

- Tour of the Ice Gallery: images from the PIPC's archives frozen into blocks of ice

- Live music

- Warm food and beverages

- Tours of Knickerbocker Ice House #3, an historic remnant from the 19th Century ice trade

- Campfires and warming stations

- Pleine Air Art...local artists capture the beauty of the park on Saturday; art goes on sale Sunday

- Custom built ice boat, capable of reaching speeds of 60 mph, auctioned off Sunday
