Musical Comedy Murders of 1940

Despite its title, the diverting season-opener from Cornwall Central High School’s Drama Club is no musical. Rather, John Bishop’s “The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940” is a rollicking slapstick farce that sends up nearly every favorite Hollywood detective thriller of the Golden Age while simultaneously skewering the more ridiculous aspects of “show biz.” Performances are November 14 & 15 at 7 p.m. and November 16 at 2 p.m. in the CCHS auditorium. Curtain is at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, with a Sunday matinee starting at 2 p.m. All tickets are general admission, and will be available at the door (no advance ticket sales) for $7; seniors and students, $5.

As the curtain rises on the Westchester estate of a wealthy Broadway backer, preparations are underway for the arrival of guests from the city – the proposed cast of a new musical comedy and members of its blockbuster creative team whose last collaboration several years prior closed, tragically, with a series of unsolved murders. Secretly, the ostensible audition is a set-up by an undercover police detective and the hostess in order to finally flush out the murderer. However, complications arise, and plans go hysterically awry. When an unexpected blizzard cuts the eccentric house party off from the outside world, the body count begins to rise, and there is a madcap dash to unmask the killer before they all fall victim, one by one.

Described by director Rich Aufiero as “one part Agatha Christie, two parts Neil Simon, and a splash of Mel Brooks,” the fast-paced, laugh-packed tangle of a mystery is presented by two talented sets of student-actors.
