Return to the Roof Garden
On December 29, 1915, the wealthy businessmen, politicians and high society of Newburgh gathered for a gala event, the grand opening of Alsdorf Hall. From the rooftop, one could see the gas street lamps that lit Liberty Street, the lawns of Washington’s Headquarters, and the Hudson River.
The historical significance of Alsdorf Hall rests with the African-American family that financed and built it. Alsdorf Hall was built by the descendants of a man born as a slave in Ulster County. For 85 years, the Alsdorf family taught music and dance in Newburgh.
On Sunday, the Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands will present a revival of Newburgh’s preeminent family of music and dance. Kevin Barrett, former City of Newburgh Historian and author of “Newburgh: Mecca of Historic Preservation” will present a program of the history and music of the Alsdorf family at 3 p.m. at the Crawford House, 189 Montgomery Street, Newburgh. $5 non-members; members free.
