USMA Woodwind Quintet
The West Point Band’s Academy Woodwind Quintet will perform a recital on Sunday, January 24th at 3:00 p.m. in the West Point Jewish Chapel. The program will include the music of Paquito D’Rivera, Mozart, Derek Bourgeois and others. The recital is free and open to the public.
Born in Cuba, Paquito D’Rivera began his career as a child prodigy. A restless musical genius during his teen years, Mr. D’Rivera created various ground-breaking musical ensembles. As a founding member of the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna, he directed that group for two years, while at the same time playing both the clarinet and saxophone with the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. Mr. D’Rivera’s Aires Tropicales is a true gem of the modern woodwind quintet repertoire.
English composer Derek Bourgeois was born in 1941. He attended Cambridge University. He has composed forty-six symphonies, fifteen concertos, several other extended orchestral works, seven major works for chorus and orchestra, two operas and a musical. His Serenade was originally written as the recessional for his first wedding. Bourgeois includes a musical joke in the piece by writing it in a mixed meter, 7/8 in this case. The odd number of beats per measure makes it impossible for the wedding party to gracefully exit the church.
Please allow extra travel time for the 100% vehicle and photo I.D. inspection at Stony Lonesome and Thayer gates.
