The History of Military Awards
Washington's Headquarters State Historic Site, Newburgh will play host to Colonel Norvell V. Coots, M.D., at 1 p.m. as part of the Site's 225th anniversary commemoration of the awarding of the first Badge of Military Merit.
Colonel Coots will present a topical lecture that will cover the history of military awards in the United States Army from the very first authorized medal for enlisted men.
The Colonel is now serving as the Commander and CEO of the Keller Army Community Hospital at West Point, New York, and as the 52nd Surgeon of the United States Military Academy. He has served previously as the Senior Medical Staff Officer in the Directorate of Health Policy and Services at the Office of the Army Surgeon General, the Deputy Commander of the Army Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany, and as the Deputy V Corps Surgeon during the War in Kosovo. Over his career he has gained significant experience in both clinical and operational medicine. Dr. Coots is an amateur historian with an interest in military medicine and militaria through the end of the Imperial Period and WWI.
