Powers and Hall Duo, classical saxophone and organ
St. John Episcopal Church of Cornwall, NY announces the Revelations Chamber Music Concert Series. Accentuating a wide variety of chamber music, with unique combinations of instruments and new music, concerts will be on Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m.
The third concert of the Revelations Series will be on Saturday evening, April 17, 2010 at 7:30pm at St. John Episcopal Church, located at the corner of Clinton andHazen Streets in Cornwall, NY. This concert will feature the renowned Powers and Hall Duo, saxophone and organ. There is a suggested donation of $10 and a light reception will follow.
The Powers and Hall Duo is in its tenth year of existence. Since its establishment at the Jacobs School of Music of Indiana University, the Duo has performed on the unusual combination of classical saxophone and organ in the United States and abroad. They have been heard in such venues as OxfordUniversity, the Universityof Pennsylvania, Oklahoma City University, Saint Patrick Cathedral, Trinity Wall Street and other venues of note. In 2006, the Duo commissioned DavidHurd (the 2010 Composer of the Year of the American Guild of Organists) to compose a Sonata for alto saxophone and organ. The work, premiered at the 2006 World Saxophone Congress in Ljubljana, is available from the French publisherMusik Fabrik. Boston composer Leonardo Ciampa composed his Suite, opus 208, for the duo in 2008, which was given its first performances on historic organs in northern Italy.
Jonathan Hall, a native of New York City, earned a doctorate in music at Indiana, where his principal teacher was Marilyn Keiser. He has also studied under David Schrader and coached with Paul Manz and Martin Jean. He is a Fellow and Choirmaster of the American Guild of Organists; a Fellow of Trinity College, London; and a member of Pi Kappa Lambda and the Saint Wilfrid Club in the City of New York. His first book, Calvin Hampton: A Musician Without Borders, is available from Wayne Leupold Editions. He is the Director of Music at St. John Episcopal Church of Cornwall, NY.
Bill Powers is a native of Overbrook, Kansas, and also studied at Indiana, under the renowned classical saxophonist Eugene Rousseau. He has also studied with Otis Murphy and Thomas Walsh. He is a member of theRidgewood , NJ Concert Band and the North American Saxophone Alliance. In addition, Bill sings in the choir at St. John Episcopal Church of Cornwall, NY.
The Powers and Hall Duo will perform works by Halley, Bach, Handel, Moussorgsky, and Pinkham. The program will also feature a medley of Irish tunes.
