"The Brown Bess in Colonial America"
Thursday, April 8 at 7 PM
In the 18th century, Great Britain was one of the world's great superpowers and at times British foreign policy was simply to " make the world England." To that end, British armies traveled the globe making the need for high quality firearms paramount. The first standardized British military musket, commonly referred to as the Brown Bess, did not fully evolve until 1730. It was a massive weapon, 62 inches long and weighed more than 11 pounds. This shoulder arm was one of history's most famous firearms and was renowned for its strength, reliability and speed of loading. The Brown Bess was the primary weapon of the Crown on the battlefields of the 18th century and it did good service for England and the colonies alike. Examples of these colonial muskets are unique pieces of American history. They were first used in North America to establish British rule and then were carried by the sometimes barefoot patriots to help make us the nation we are today.
Sponsored by the Fort Montgomery Battle Site Association, this lecture and slide-presentation by historian and re-enactor Bill Ahearn begins at 7 PM on Thursday, April 8th, 2010.
The Fort Montgomery Visitor Center is located at 690 Route 9W,1/4 mile north of the Bear Mountain Traffic Circle in Fort Montgomery, NY 10922.
