General News: Shakespeare Workshops at the Library

July 02, 2020

Local actor leads virtual Shakespeare workshops

CORNWALL, NY – Local actor Aaron Gaines will leads a series of Shakespeare-themed workshops facilitated by the Cornwall Public Library. Shakespeare Out Loud will be presented at 10:00am on both July 9 and July 10. Although a joy to read in silence, Shakespeare’s work was written to be spoken out loud. With some minor detective work and a few basic acting exercises, participants will have the chance to become brave, brilliant orators of Shakespeare’s text.

Understanding Shakespeare will be offered at 1:00pm on both July 9 and 10. Using a practical approach to the text, including detective work and a literary toolbox, participants will gain a better understanding of Shakespeare’s poetry, characters, and stories.

Speeches and scenes will be provided, though patrons should feel free to bring their own and all experience levels are welcome. This program is geared towards 8th grade to adults, and patrons are required to register via the library’s online calendar. This program will be conducted via Zoom. Zoom links and passwords will be sent to registrants the day of the program.

Aaron Gaines has appeared Off-Broadway with the Irish Repertory Theatre, Peccadillo Theatre Company, Metropolitan Playhouse, and Shakespeare Forum. Regional credits include the LEXington Theatre Company, the Utah Shakespeare Festival, and the Shakespeare Theatres of D.C. and New Jersey. He has been a guest teacher for the Utah Shakespeare Festival, Utah Valley University, PAA Colorado, Riverside Theatre Arts Academy, and dozens of public schools in New York, Utah, Nevada, California, and Arizona. Since 2010, he has been a teaching artist and adjudicator for the Utah Shakespeare Festival’s annual High School Shakespeare Competition. Aaron graduated from California State University Fullerton and has studied with the McCaskill Studio and the Upright Citizens Brigade.
This project -- Cornwall Artists, Writers, Musicians and Performers -- is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and is administered by Arts Mid-Hudson.
