Parents find a sense of community in the library’s newest book group

CORNWALL, NY – The Cornwall Public Library has launched a brand-new virtual book discussion group for parents who are looking to find a sense of community and support as they face unprecedented time alone at home with their children. Their next virtual meeting is Friday, June 5 at 8:30pm via the library's Zoom platform. They will be discussing Kim John Payne’s Simplicity Parenting: Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raise Calmer, Happier, and More Secure Kids. The group plans to explore together a better alternative for families - one that reduces stress and allows for connection, creativity, and relaxation.

Many parents are reaching a breaking point after having been unexpectedly thrown into home-based education. They are struggling to balance work-from-home demands with meeting their family's basic needs, keeping up with housework, and managing stress levels. In many ways, quarantine has forced us to slow down and do less - but for most of us it hasn't been easy to settle into a comfortable new "normal" routine.

In the inaugural meeting, they read and discussed Ainsley Arment's The Call of the Wild and Free: Reclaiming Wonder in Your Child's Education. The lively discussion centered on thinking outside the box of traditional education and nurturing a child’s sense of curiosity and joy at home.

The group is looking for members that can read with an open mind and come ready to share thoughts over Zoom with a small group of parents who are in the "trenches" with you. Titles are available on either of the library’s ebook platforms, Libby and Hoopla. Register ahead through the library’s online calendar and check the calendar listing for more details.
