West Point Training
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Area residents can expect to hear summer training activities conducted during May, June, July and August on the military installation to include Camp Buckner and Lake Frederick beginning in late May.
Training opportunities for the cadets include infantry operations, artillery firing, weapons training, aviation operations, military engineering projects, training in field communications, demolitions and survival skills techniques.
Noise levels will be sporadic through mid-August with increased activity during specialized training operations in July. Residents can expect to see and hear low-flying helicopters in and around the training and cantonment area in support of cadet summer training with increased activity during Air Assault School June 2-18.
Summer training will not affect authorized users from using the West Point recreation areas but may impact certain fishing and hunting locations.
Training is conducted to simulate the physical and mental challenges cadets will face when they become officers in the U.S. Army.
AIR ASSAULT TRAINING TO BE CONDUCTED AT WEST POINT
WEST POINT, N.Y. –– Summer training activities will begin shortly at the U.S. Military Academy and include first-time air assault training along the west bank of the Hudson River just north of South Dock.
The surrounding communities may experience increased noise levels of aircraft (UH-60 helicopter) during the dates and times below:
From 12:00 – 3 p.m. on May 26 and 30; June 2, 3, 6, 9, 10, 13, 16, 17, 20 and 24.
Air assault training was previously held at Camp Smith, Peekskill, New York, but was relocated to the academy due to the removal of the required towers there. More than 700 cadets will participate in this training broken into four, 10-day sessions, conducted by a Mobile Training Team from The Sabalauski Air Assault School from the 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
This training is important to cadets as it pertains to their military development at USMA. This unique opportunity will provide exposure to how the Army trains, will create interaction with the MTT, specifically the non-commissioned officers, and ultimately offer an invaluable instruction to successfully complete Air Assault School which is both physically and mentally demanding. Graduating from this course, known as the hardest 10 days in the Army, will be an achievement that the cadets can be proud of and inspire them to greater achievements in their future Army careers.
