The Congressional Medal of Honor, since 1862, has been the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force that can be bestowed on an individual serving in the Armed Forces of the United States.

Cornwall American Legion Post 353 is presently constructing a monument on the grounds of the Town of Cornwall Town Hall, located at 183 Main Street as a tribute to the Medal of Honor.

The Monument is being erected to honor the four local members of the Society of the Medal of Honor laid to rest in Cornwall, so as to honor and remember their individual sacrifices in wartime to defend both their comrades and our nation, in the hopes that the Monument will inspire all Americans to be good and worthy citizens and to actively celebrate patriotism.

Members of the Society of the Medal of Honor to be honored are as below:
1. Pvt. William J. Brewer - Civil War
2. Cpl. Owen McGough - Civil War
3. 1Lt. Abram P. Haring - Civil War
4. 2Lt. George W.G. Boyce Jr. - WWII

The site will consist of 4 granite stones each engraved with an individual bronze plaque for each honoree which will provide a narrative, biography and description of each individuals heroic deeds.

With the help and support of the Town of Cornwall, several community groups and many individuals, American Legion Post 353 us hopeful that it will raise the necessary funds.

The total cost is approximately $9,000.

Anyone interested in donating can contact American Legion Post 353.

The Cornwall Memorial is tentatively scheduled to be dedicated October 18.

Comments:

I would be interested to find out what the Town of Cornwall's contribution to this effort is (Purely promotional? Financial?)

I'm as impressed as the next guy with the bravery of the people who earn this honor, but surely there is crumbling infrastructure that needs the Town's funds (if that is what the support consists of)more.
