September 16, 2014

The Cornwall Public Library recently announced plans for expansion. The library will be adding 30 percent more space and address needed building repairs.

The Cornwall Public Library Board of Trustees will hold an information session September 17, 2014 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm to unveil its proposed plan to renovate the library.

To learn more about the plan visit http://www.CornwallLibraryRenovation.com

The library listed the following description of the renovation on their website and posted the attached picture.

This project responds to the needs outlined in the library’s 2011 Long Range Strategic Plan that surveyed Cornwall residents using focus groups and questionnaires to help shape the library’s future direction. A public referendum would be required to approve the bond financing needed to fund the expansion. The project will be completed in mid-2016.
OUR RE-IMAGINED CORNWALL PUBLIC LIBRARY
• 3,300 additional square feet
• New roof, sprinkler system with other necessary repairs
• Expanded community room with maximum seating capacity of 112
• Designated local history room
• Dedicated teen room
• Increased gallery space for local artists to display their work
• Four meeting rooms to accommodate local groups

HOW MUCH?
• The $3.68 million bond would be financed over 20 years.
• Homeowners in the Cornwall Central School District would pay an estimated $41 more per year per the average market value of a home in the community.
• The project’s cost translates to less than one cup of coffee per week.

Comments:

So if "The project?s cost translates to less than one cup of coffee per week." Why can't you fundraise for it instead if stealing it at gunpoint from the residents through taxation?

Library usage is up over 140 percent over the last several years. Libraries are more and more important to our community. And after extensive focus groups told the Library they needed more programs and private areas for children that would not affect other patrons and so much more! The Board of trustees has done an excellent job of creating those spaces without changing the original foot print of the building. Btw, I wouldn't try to fundraise for such a serious renovation / Capitol improvement. Also, last time I checked Billy the Kid was dead.
