The Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson Board of Trustees held its monthly business meeting on Monday, May 20. The board held a public hearing on the issue of a the loading zone at Cumberland Farms. Several parking spots are often taken up by trucks at various times during the day. The trucks take up several needed parking spots and add to noise and congestion. Lee Murphy, who lives next to Cumberland Farms, gathered information on actual truck loading times. Mark Edsall thanked Mr. Murphy for submitting the information that helped the board make a decision. The board made a motion to allow trucks to load at 4am-7:30am for Cumberland Farms delivery and to possibly add an afternoon time as well.

Peter Neumann of Braden Place addressed the Board during public comment. He cited buckling roads, driveway damage, leaking and drainage issues on Braden Place and asked the village to address the situation.

Mayor Coyne brought up the subject of crude oil shipments passing through Cornwall-on-Hudson being a possible hazard to the community in the event of an accident. He is researching the subject and gave the Board an update on correspondence he received from another municipality on the subject.

The Cornwall-on-Hudson Police Department recently received a grant from the NYS Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee in the amount of $2,600 that it will use to purchase new radar material.

David Halvorsen from the DPW updated the board on the new life preserver purchase with safety rope.

The DPW is hiring a summer intern from Cornell who will be working closely with Halvorsen to measure and categorize the roads in the village and figure out what is best to fix first. Halvorsen is travelling up to Cornell to meet with the intern and learn a computer program but he said he has already some of the measuring of road widths and lengths which will give the intern a head start.

A resolution was made passed to hire Jennifer Pryne and Kathleen Hand to run the Summer Recreation Program. This year there are 2 more grades allowed to participate. Children entering 7th grade can now attend the program and participate in an educational part of the program that shows what it is like to become a counselor in training. Children entering kindergarten are eligible for the two sessions for the summer which are three weeks long.
This year the price will increase for residents from $110 to $125 and remain at $225 for non-residents.

The Board also discussed the upcoming RiverFest and new ArtFest. This year some more traffic may be allowed to drop off artists and their work for the ArtFest. They are also permitting Sportsplex to hold a free wellness program down at the river on June 21, 2014.
