To honor Arbor Day, kindergarten students and teachers at Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary hosted a tree planting and dedication Friday on the school’s front lawn.

The ceremony was held to recognize the importance of trees and nature. Principal Gail Wehmann asked the students what they learned about trees this year in school and received many responses from the students. One student pointed out how trees help with paper towels which received a chuckle from the adults in the crowd.

The tree that was planted was a dogwood that was donated by the Brian Foley and Joe McCormick of Foley Landscaping. Foley explained how the little buds on the tree will turn into leaves soon. One student volunteered to help remind the other kids in the school not to climb the baby tree. The students were asked to help plant the tree and lined up to take turns shoveling the dirt.

Another Arbor Day Tree Planting took place in the morning in the Town of Cornwall (a Tree City USA Community) at Rings Pond. This is Cornwall's 10th Anniversary as a recognized "Tree City USA Community". The Cornwall Lions Club donated $250 for the planting. The children from Butterhill Day School sang songs for the ceremony.

The newly planted tree is visible to the right in the photo.

Arbor Day, when people are encouraged to plant and care for trees, is celebrated on the last Friday in April.
