General News: eReference Resources

March 30, 2014

from the Cornwall Public Library

Cornwall Public Library has 46 different eReference Resources available for your use, accessible through the library website. What is an eReference Resource? It is an online collection of information within a particular area or category useful for reference, learning, research, and/or recreation. Some of the eReference Resources are available only through libraries who fund them for their patrons. Others can be accessed privately, but for a fee. By going through the library’s website there are no costs involved and, with many of them, you can take advantage of them from wherever you can access the website with your device (computer, notebook, iPad, smart phone, etc.)

The type of information available is varied, diverse, and comprehensive and includes:
Reference and learning tools for those with learning challenges
Research information pertinent to specific areas of study and geared to children and adults of all ages and interests (i.e. history, encyclopedias, census data, etc.)
Genealogical research including Ancestry.com (available for use within the library only)
Language learning tools
Biographical data
Collections of newspapers and magazine titles
Medical & health information

Cornwall Public Library recently added two popular language-learning programs.
Mango Language Learning offers those who speak English the opportunity to take courses to learn any of 57 different languages; 17 languages for those not speaking English; and 4 religious/scholarly languages.
Mango Conversations uses real-life situations and actual conversations to more effectively teach a new language. By listening to and repeating after material designed from native conversations, a person not only learns the individual words and phrases, they will also know how they're used in practical situations and conversations.
The Translation Tool uses the Google translation engine to translate the ‘gist’ of conversations from one language to another.
MUZZY is an award-winning language program used by kids, parents, teachers and librarians world-wide, now available to Cornwall Library patrons anywhere with an internet connection. MUZZY Online is a comprehensive, interactive and fun way to learn a second language that now includes all new animation and sound.
Watch the MUZZY story and play interactive language learning games and vocabulary lessons in English (American or British), French, Spanish (Castilian or Latin-American), German, Portuguese (Brazilian), Mandarin Chinese, Russian and Italian.
