General News: Fire at HVSPCA

March 27, 2014

from the Hudson Valley SPCA

It is every animal rescuer's worst nightmare: The predawn phone call reporting that your shelter is on fire. You don't believe the words coming across the line. They must be repeated several times. And once they sink in, you cannot move fast enough to get to those creatures who are reliant on you for every aspect of their lives.

That is what the team at the Hudson Valley SPCA awoke to this morning. A fire, apparently sparked by a drier hose, took down a kennel at our facility. Two-long time residents, Harley and Johnny, were lost in the blaze. Five others were taken to a local animal ER where they continue to undergo treatment for burns and smoke inhalation.

Fortunately, the brave firefighters of the Vales Gate Fire Department managed to knock down the flames before they could spread to our front kennel or our cattery. And our local community has proven to be amazing in opening their homes to many of our displaced dogs.

Now, the task of rebuilding must begin. But with 125+ animals still in our care and our coffers nearly dry, we are praying that we can we can find the funds to continue our work!

The Hudson Valley SPCA does not receive money from the ASPCA or any federal, state or local government agencies. Our survival depends on the generosity of people like you! Won't you please help?

Donate now by visiting our PetCaring.com page and pledging your support!

Comments:

Ten Storm King School students and 2 teachers baked on Friday evening, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday night to have a bake sale today, Monday 3/31, to raise money for the HVSPCA. Four students helped Emily Boronkay, the SKS Community Service Coordinator, with the sale. All the baking supplies were donated by the school and 2 teachers. So far the sale has raised almost $150, with enough cookies, muffins, and krispy treats left to be able to top the goal of $200 if they all sell!
