The Cornwall Conservation Advisory Committee was addressed by Kurt Hahn, the Director of Emergency Management for both Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson relative to his continuing public education of the dangers and hazards posed by the explosive/flammable/corrosive, etc. cargos bring shipped by rail through the area and region as a whole.

To say the least, the presentation and question and answer session were very very enlightening in that a mishap could be devastating to the area and all our residents, particularly the most vulnerable of all, our children and the elderly.

No present warning system currently exists within either the Town or Village in the event of such an occurrence.

The Conservation Advisory Committee also discussed (1) Recycling at 4th of of July Fireworks Festival, (2) Arbor Day Tree Planting, and (3) the annual River Sweep cleanup.

Town of Cornwall Emergency Management Director Kurt Hahn also appeared before the Town Board Work Session Tuesday evening March 4th and spoke of the very real hazards that the shipment of crude oil and explosive, flammable and corrosive materials traveling the CSX West Shore Line pose to Cornwall, Cornwall on Hudson, Newburgh and New Windsor residents, and the entire Mid-Hudson area as a whole.

Hahn said "My efforts include education of our residents through several community preparedness workshops. Training of our first responders in response to hazardous materials incidents specific to our community. This is challenging due to lack of local funding."

Hahn is involved in the implementation of the portable emergency operations center which is well underway with the $15k grant the Cornwall Office of Emergency Mgmt received from Entergy Energy. He is also organizing a meeting of the Cornwall emergency management committee to modify the current emergency plan.
