There was a massive house fire at the intersection of Independence Drive and Red Coat Drive (off Bethlehem Road) in New Windsor this afternoon which completely destroyed the residence.

According to Vails Gate Fire Chief Chris Sweeney, the Vails Gate Fire Department was dispatched at about 4:15pm to a reported garage fire at a single family home and upon arrival found the garage fully involved, along with heavy extension into the house and possibly structures to the right and rear.

Multiple hose lines were deployed to prevent extension and a Tower Ladder was utilized to knock down the bulk of the fire.

According to Chief Sweeney, at home at the time of the fire was a 10-12 year old son and his friend, who escaped on their own.

There were no injuries sustained by either of the occupants or the Fire Fighters; however, a family dog and cat perished.

Assisting Vails Gate on scene was the Salisbury Mills Fire Department and on standby at Vails Gate Fire Station #1 were New Windsor and Cornwall Fire Departments.

Chief Sweeney said the cause of the fire is under investigation, but it is not considered suspicious.
