General News: Terminated Teacher Addresses Board of Ed

June 12, 2013

The Board of Education met at Cornwall Elementary School on Monday night, June 10, for its regular Work Session meeting.

In the audience was Nubia Hunt, a Business teacher at the high school who was recently terminated when the proposed budget failed to pass.

Commenting on her termination, Mrs. Hunt stated that she was “disappointed in the way it was handled,” mentioning that receiving a pink slip in her mailbox was “cold” after having worked in the district for years.

Mrs. Hunt spoke of recently reading about a Cornwall graduate who chose to major in Accounting at college, indicating to her that high school students do receive a benefit from the type of course she teaches, a benefit that others will not be able to take advantage of next year.

She reminded the Board and the audience of the importance of teachers in the lives of our community’s children, saying that “it takes a village” to raise them.

Having made such comments, though, Mrs. Hunt also stated that she was a taxpayer with children in the district, and that she would vote in favor of the next budget.

She expressed gratitude for her experiences as a teacher in the district and declared that she would “do it all over again.”

Charles Frankel, Vice President of the Board of Education, commended Mrs. Hunt for having the “class” to show up to the meeting and express her support for our schools.

Superintendent Timothy Rehm said that the unfortunate termination of a teacher “just indicates where we’re at as a district right now,” describing the district as “tapped out.”

Mr. Rehm said he was “disturbed” and “disappointed” with the level of voter turnout, especially because there were school staff members who did not show up to vote.

Comments:

Not taking away from the excellent job Mr. Rehm has done during his time in Cornwall, I am somewhat disturbed to see that he was disappointed with school staff who did not vote. Taking everything with a grain of salt that appears in print, if I was a district employee, I would be very disturbed to think that the school board and/or administration might have been "watching" who voted and who did not.

The district is "tapped out"? Why does the administration keep getting increases?

I am not sure a formal business class is needed that focuses on accounting, management, etc., but I would love for all HS students to receive education on how to balance a check register, basic fundamentals of savings and investing. The kids I have spoken to use debit (or even credit) cards and do not have a clue what their balance is nor what it means to overdraft, etc. Most think if they have a card there's always money. Also, none of these kids had a savings (unless parents kept one), nor do they understand what is means to invest, in terms of stocks, bonds, etc. When I provided them a brief explanation "take your money and place into an account that earns interest" one of them said, "so I can do nothing and let my money make its own money." This was disturbing. Honestly, I this should be priority over some of the other courses still being offered.

Also, I find it disturbing that Mr. Rehm said this about his staff as well. When I was at the MS waiting to vote there was a woman inquiring on whether other members of her family voted and the folks there allowed her to look without question. It was not revealed which way she was voting, but regardless I find it unethical on both parties.
