General News: District Report Card and Technology Discussed

The Board of Education met at Cornwall Elementary School on Tuesday night, May 7, for a work session. Items on the agenda included a mandatory budget hearing and a presentation by Michael Brooks on the district’s report card.
The budget hearing provided the Board with an overall review of this particular issue. As it stands, the Board has elected to pursue a proposed budget which would involve exceeding the tax cap and would require 60% of voter approval to pass.
The public may vote on the budget on May 21, at Cornwall Central Middle School, between 6 AM and 9 PM.
Mr. Brooks presented the Board with a very positive district report card, displaying that, once again, Cornwall tends to exceed the average in test passing rates.
Despite this good news, several Board members commented that they would not like to see the district get complacent and accept its current performance – impressive though it may be – as simply good enough.
A brief presentation on technology followed. Faculty and staff members throughout the various school buildings have come together to form a Technology Committee which will serve to anticipate the future technological needs of the district.
As the state moves towards making standardized testing computerized, this poses a difficulty to districts that may not be able to afford the necessary technology.
Our district is taking a proactive approach to this issue.
