Our Men Fought Like Tigers:
The 124th New York at the Battle of Chancellorsville
A Presentation by Charles LaRocca

On Monday, May 13th, the public is invited to Cornwall Public Library to hear Charles LaRocca, Colonel of the 124th NYSV, “An Historic Military Command”, give a presentation entitled: “Our Men Fought like Tigers”, The 124th New York at the Battle of Chancellorsville. The program, the ninth event in the Civil War Sesquicentennial lecture series at Cornwall Public Library, will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the library’s community room.

The 124th New York fought in its first great battle at Chancellorsville, Virginia, April 28-May 6, 1863. In many ways, this battle defined the 124th New York as a fighting regiment. As part of the 3rd Corps, Army of the Potomac, commanded by the colorful General Daniel E. Sickles, the regiment performed heroically, charging the enemy twice to save an important artillery position while sustaining nearly 40% casualties. It was in this battle that Col. Augustus Van Horne Ellis first called them his “Orange Blossoms” and where each man in the regiment began the practice of wearing an orange ribbon in a buttonhole of his uniform jacket as a remembrance of home. The regiment would fight in many desperate battles before the war ended, but its reputation for steadiness and courage under fire was forged at Chancellorsville.

This program is supported by a grant from the New York Council for the Humanities and by the Cornwall Public Library Foundation. Registration is not required. The next lecture in the Civil War Sesquicentennial Series at Cornwall Public Library will take place on Wednesday, June 26th. Contact the library with any questions, at 534-8282.
