General News: Oscar Winner Was Cornwall Native

February 27, 2013

Local residents had an extra reason to talk about the Oscars this year. The winner of the Best Animated Short category was Paperman, a brief but charming film that, as Westchester Magazine reports, was directed by John Kahrs, who happened to grow up in Cornwall.

In fact, in a 2005 article at seqair.com, writer Stephan Wilkinson, also from Cornwall, draws attention to the wealth of animation talent hidden right in our area.

Wilkinson explains that he was introduced to John Kahrs by a mutual friend, Carl Ludwig, who was responsible for writing the software that was used to make Tron, one of the first major Hollywood films to employ the use of computer animation.

Ludwig went on to found Blue Sky Studios, an animation firm which worked on such films as Ice Age.

Kahrs, prior to his Oscar win, animated a major sequence for Pixar’s The Incredibles, one of the most acclaimed animated films of recent years. According to Wilkinson, John Lasseter himself, writer of Toy Story, has said that “John is the best” and has spoken very enthusiastically about his talent.

Now that he has an Oscar, it seems safe to assume that John Kahr’s career will continue to flourish.
