A fire broke out in the garage at family owned Bernicker Auto Sales and Service on Main St. early Monday morning. Marie Bernicker said that Sunday night, a Dodge SUV was towed and stored in the garage that had water in it but no antifreeze and it began to smolder overnight. Monday morning, the tenants that live upstairs in the building smelled smoke and alerted the owners and called Cornwall Fire department.

Marie Bernicker said that while there is damage in the garage, it could’ve been worse and “thank God no one was hurt.” She said they are in the process of cleaning up the damage, using the company Serv Pro, who have been wonderful and have made the process better than expected.

Comments:

Tenants were never asked how they were doing not once. Thank god for the American Red Cross. Also Serv pro was not offered to the tenants upstairs until they had to go downstairs and ask what was going on and how theyd be taken care of. In reply, they got an answer of we( meaning the owners) had no idea there was smoke damage up there and that we haven't had a chance to come up. However- it was the smoke alarm in the adjoining apartments that was set off due to the fire in the garage. If I owned a business and had tenants living in a building that was involved in a fire My first priority would be to make sure that they were okay and somewhere to go. Especially when a small child who was chronic asthma is involved....but not everyone's the same obviously.
