General News: Town Board Hears Presentations at Work Session

The Town Board met in Town Hall on Tuesday night, April 2, for the monthly work session. The typical work session was preceded by presentations from individuals who would like to work with the town on various projects.
The first presentation was one informing the town that the county is looking to organize a film office under the umbrella of the Orange County Arts Council. The board was told that towns in the area “have been very passive” about attracting films to the region, and since film productions usually generate not only interest, but also revenue for the area in which they are being filmed, municipalities in Orange County are being urged to create the necessary permits and laws that would attract filmmakers to the region.
A following presentation from Bill Diamond of Dream Factory Entertainment Group informed the board that he and his group are looking to create an entertainment industry facility in the region. They are looking at three potential sites, two of which are in Cornwall, to build a facility that would also serve to attract filmmakers to the area and create jobs.
Mr. Diamond also explained that a museum featuring movie props would be part of the facility, drawing in tourism. Although this was merely a short presentation, the board seemed enthusiastic about the possibility of bringing this type of business to Cornwall.
Mr. Diamond was followed by NYMA’s new Head of Schools. He emphasized that NYMA’s new curriculum would incorporate a strong community service element, while maintaining all the values of a military education.
Board member Randy Clark expressed concern over how Obridge Academy, which is taking over NYMA, plans on making money and increasing enrollment. In response, he was told that marketing is key. The school will need to improve its technology, and also undergo some cosmetic changes.
Citizens in attendance were eager to learn more about Obridge Academy. Although they were told that it is a “conglomerate of investors” from the United States, with no one representing the business side of Obridge Academy present, answers were vague.
The night ended with many citizens once again asking for transparency on the Cornwall Commons issue. Although not much has changed on the issue, people are concerned about key documents being made available.
